Now that the temperatures are starting to soar, it's time to worry about your asphalt driveway. Your driveway took a beating during the winter, but nothing as bad as it will endure during the summer. The summer heat can really wreak havoc on your asphalt driveway. To help protect your driveway and prevent some of the damage, here are some steps you should take this summer.
Start the Summer with a Thorough Cleansing
If it's been a while since you gave your driveway a thorough cleansing, now's the time to take care of that. You don't need to get down on your hands and knees to scrub it, but you do need to give it a deep cleaning. The best way to do that is with a bucket of soapy water and a push broom.
Fill your bucket with warm water, and add about a ¼ cup of dish detergent. Pour a small amount of soapy water on one section at a time, and scrub with your broom. Once you've washed the entire driveway, rinse it off with your garden hose. You should actually wash your driveway at least twice a year.
Seal Out Potential Damage
Once you've washed your driveway with soap and water and allowed to dry thoroughly, you should apply a fresh coat of asphalt sealant. The sealant will lock out moisture and prevent damage caused by engine fluids.
If you found damage while you were washing your driveway, you should repair it before you apply the sealant, however. That will ensure that you don't seal in the damage, as well as prevent further damage this summer.
Cool Down Those Surface Temps
If you live in a region that experiences extreme heat during the summer, you need to do everything you can to cool down your asphalt. You might not realize this, but extreme heat can cause severe damage to your asphalt. The best way to cool down your asphalt is to take advantage of the water you'll be using around the yard.
For instance, aim one of your garden sprinklers towards the driveway to utilize some of the water to cool down your driveway. You can also wash your car at home once in a while. This will allow you to cool down your asphalt without wasting water.
Don't let the summer heat destroy your asphalt driveway. Use the tips provided here to protect your asphalt from heat-related damage this summer. However, if your driveway becomes damaged, contact an asphalt paving company like Phend & Brown to determine what needs to be done.Share

Welcome to my website. I'm Albert Frost. Besides my dad, one of my biggest role models was my uncle Rick. He was a construction contractor who would let me come on his construction sites and also taught me everything he knew about building homes, including how to install hardwood flooring and add insulation. I always wanted to grow up to build houses like my uncle. I used to help my uncle with a lot of the grunt work needed to make a home a reality. But then I hurt my back playing football. Until I heal completely, I'm going to devote as much of my time as possible to teaching others about various construction topics I'm interested in.
